Chapter 1: The Market Event

5am as the cockerels crowed, we dragged ourselves out of bed to begin the laundry process. Sunday is laundry and food day, but this Sunday (6th August) we held an event at the market to introduce ourselves to the community of Loumbila. 

A 5h alors, que les coqs chantaient, nous abandonnions nos lits pour commencer la lessive. Le dimanche était réservé pour la lessive et la nourriture mais ce dimanche 6 Aout, nous avons tenu notre évènement communautaire au marché pour nous présenter à la communauté de Loumbila.

When the crowd began to gather.

During the first week of our placement we brainstormed all the ways we could maximise our impact during our placement. One suggestion, inspired by the previous cohort, was to hold an event at the local market in the hope of obtaining more participants for our lessons. We also thought it would be a good idea to sell some of the bio-products that the staff of AML create using Neem Oil.

Durant la prémière semaine de notre placement nous avons beaucoup réfléchi à toutes les manières d’impacter la communauté tout le long de notre placement .une suggestion de la cohorte précédente était de tenir un évènement dans le marché local dans l’espoir d’avoir plus de participants  à nos cours .Nous avons aussi pensé que ce serait une bonne idée de vendre quelque produit BIO que le staff de AML produit à base d’huile de Neem.

So at 7.45am we met at our offices and journeyed to Nomgana market where we began setting up.  We had a tent, music, speakers, an animator and lots of enthusiasm. 
Ainsi a 7h45mn nous nous sommes rencontrés au bureau et avons convergé vers le marché de Nomgana où nous avons commencé à tout mettre en place. Nous avions une tente, de la musique, un animateur et beaucoup d’enthousiasme.

By 9am we had attracted around 60 of the local children who were enticed by the music and games and before we knew it...the market stalls were vacated and over 200 people congregated around our tent. We were elated! It was time to present ourselves to the market.

A partir de 9h nous avions attiré environs 60 enfants de la localité par la musique et les jeux et avant de s’en rendre compte le marché se vidait et plus de 200 personnes se regroupaient autour de notre tente. Nous étions ravis! Alors tour à tour, tous les volontaires se sont presentés a la communauté.

By 10am, we had scouted the dancers of the next generation who left the stage with bags of popcorn, sweets, notepads and pens alongside the winners of "La Pêche" - a game for only those with a skilled aim.

 A 10h nous avons testé des enfants qui sont venus danser, et joué à la pêche, ils ont quitté la scène avec des sachets de popcorn, bonbon, bloc-notes et des stylos

At 11am with a somewhat shaky French introduction, we began speaking to the crowd about our activities. (This was also translated in the local language Moore.) We explained what ICS and International Service do and what we will be doing during our stay.  We distributed our timetable after our speeches which detailed all of our classes- Sexual Education Awareness, Theatre Club, English, IT and Marketing and Packaging, our Community activity days - a day of Litter Picking on the 28th August, our football net creation week, commencing on the 4th September and our finale event: AML day on the 8th September. After this we continued on with more games and dance offs until 12.

A 11h avec une présentation en Français nous avons commencé à parler de nos activités à la foule (et traduit en langue locale Moore) nous avons expliqué ce que ICS et International Service font et de ce que nous ferons durant notre séjour à Loumbila. Nous avons distribué notre emploi du temps après nos discours qui détaillent toutes les activités que nous menons :éducation sexuelle club de théâtre anglais informatique marketing et emballage et journées d’activités communautaires(journée de salubrité le 28 Aout ,semaine de fabrication de filet de foot qui débute le 4 Septembre et notre évènement final :la journée AML le 8 Septembre).Après cela nous avons continué avec plus de jeu jusqu’à 12h.

The event was a big hit! It was a great way to connect with the community, inform them of our role here and to give the children a fun way to enjoy their Sunday in the markets. The smiles on their faces and their rhythmic footwork was truly heartwarming!

L’évènement a été un grand succès ; c’était une excellente façon de se connecter à la communauté de les informer de notre rôle ici et de permettre aux enfants de savourer leur dimanche au marché.

Les sourires sur leurs visages et leurs pas de danses étaient agréables !
