Our First Month in Loumbila

We have completed the fourth week of our placement and we have completed two weeks of English and IT lessons in the community. We have also successfully completed our first event in Loumbila at the market. It was very successful with our team raising awareness about the environment and the importance of recycling.

Our English classes are held twice a week, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. We have two classes according to ability: a beginners’ class and an intermediate class. The beginners’ class has covered topics such as numbers, colours, and basic conversations. It was great to see so many students enthuastic about learning, and we were all surprised at how quickly everyone learned the vocabulary.

For the first session, we were not sure of the level of English of our students for the intermediate class, making it difficult to plan the lesson. Two students attended so we practiced greetings with them. For the second session, we had an idea of the level of English we were working with and so planned to explain past, present and future continuous tense with both adjectives and verbs. The students were very engaged and wrote on the board quite a lot, demonstrating to us that they understood what we were teaching. We even set homework for them to bring to the next lesson.

Our IT classes are held early on a Saturday morning. For our first class the turnout was much better than we expected; 19 people had to share 7 computers. Our IT teachers, Mounira and Matthew, make a great team. They organized an introductory session covering all the basics, then ran a session on Microsoft Word. They asked the students to type a paragraph about themselves, and spent the rest of session showing them how to modify it with different fonts, sizes and colours. Some of the students were very nervous, as they were absolute beginners and did not know how to use a mouse.

In the UK people often take for granted their access to technology. For many young people in the community the IT classes are an important step, as they gain the skills to work in many different types of jobs or study at university.

On Saturday we held a market event. We hired an animator and hosted many games and dance competitions to try and gather as many people to our tent as possible. The team had written speeches about the environment and the importance of disposing of litter properly and recycling were possible, and the impact of the environment on health and the community. As you can see from the photos the event was very popular. We also handed out prizes of homemade popcorn, sweets, notepads, pens and pencils to our amazing contestants. All in all it was a great success. We advertised our English and IT lessons and we hope that more people will attend lessons this week!
